The theme "Black Liturgies" draws inspiration from the rich history and traditions of Black spiritual expression. Black liturgies encompass various spiritual traditions, including African diasporic religions, Christianity and Islam with its Black theological interpretations, and contemporary expressions like mindfulness and yoga.
From the supportive communities formed in spiritual gatherings to the shared practices of mindfulness and meditation, Black liturgies have always held a space for collective healing and upliftment. Enslaved Africans brought vibrant spiritual traditions across the Atlantic, forming the bedrock of religions like Vodou, Santeria, and Candomblé. The Black church, with its soulful hymns and passionate preaching, became a beacon of resilience and resistance. Today, Black practitioners are reclaiming and redefining these traditions, weaving them into contemporary wellness practices like yoga and mindfulness.
Black Liturgies is not just about history or heritage. It's about expanding our understanding of spirituality, acknowledging the vastness of human expression, and celebrating the interconnectedness of all beings. This theme transcends cultural boundaries, inviting all participants to engage in open dialogue, shared experiences, and mutual understanding.
